Historical information

Apo tin epoxi tou Mours....

The history of APOEL goes back at November 8th of 1926 due to the idea and the enthusiasm of

Diomides Simeonides who wanted to create a soccer club of Greek-Cypriots in Nicosia. The idea

was implemented by Giorgos Poulias. Giorgos Poulias's great love for sports and especially soccer

helped him to get involved more with sports events which were held in Nicosia so he had the

chance to meet Simeonides who was the best soccer player those days. The two of them together

with other Greek-Cypriots ofter many discussions and meetings decided to create APOEL. In the

early stages of it's life there was only the soccer department but shortly after due to it's popularity

APOEL created basketball, volleyball and biking departments.

What makes APOEL so great over the years is the fact that the club was able to play a  major role

in every competition becoming that way the most succesfull soccer team in Cyprus with the most

fanatic and high demanded fans. APOEL is unique in other more important aspects too like the

sacrifises of many of it's members fighting for the liberation of Cyprus from the English Colony and

later from Turkey. Onoufrios Klerides, Michalis Karaolis, Tasos Markou are only few members of the

APOEL family who sacrifise their lives for the liberty of Cyprus and hopefully the union with Greece.

APOEL's greatness can also be proven in numbers since it has a record of 17 cups and 16 Championships.

APOEL was also the first Cypriot or Greek team which qualified for the second round of any European

competition(1963).

Some of the players who helped APOEL and will be considered as some of the greatest are the following: Mouskos,Simeonides,Pakos,Avramides,Archontides,Pantelas,Partakis,Timotheou,Stylianou,N,Pantziaras,

Mours,Ioannou,Gogic and many others.
